A new green activity space to encourage exercise.
Residents of Hamburg's Eimsbüttel district had long called for more opportunities for physical activity and recreation. In response, a Modular Pumptrack was installed on a trial basis beneath a railway bridge at Moorkamp, transforming an unconventional location into a green and active community space.
The area had few active spaces. Residents wanted to take steps to improve the quality of life, and a pumptrack was one of their solutions. The installation is aimed primarily at children and young people as the area is home to many families and several schools. However, adults are equally welcome to take on the track by BMX, scooter or skateboard.
Funding
If a permanent solution is agreed, over €160,000 in funding will be made available through Hamburg Stadtgrün, the city's environmental agency.
An Active Space for All Ages
Opportunities for physical activity, particularly for young people, are limited in this part of the city. The pumptrack is designed to change that.
noa – Neighbours on Air, the Hamburg neighbourhood magazine, spoke with Kai Becker, press spokesman for the Eimsbüttel district office:
"It is difficult to create a welcoming park beneath an elevated railway bridge — it simply doesn't work. So we asked whether this space might instead offer something useful for children and young people. Other towns and communities in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein have taken a similar approach and had very positive experiences with the Modular Pumptrack."
